Known for its rich history, architecture, award winning cuisine, boutique shopping, and an abundance of outdoor activities, Galena truly has something for everyone. Conveniently located only a few hours from Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Des Moines, Madison and the Twin Cities, Galena is both close to home and a world away. With well over a million visitors a year, Galena has cemented itself as the premier vacation destination of the Midwest!
During the lead mining boom in the 1820's, Galena saw rapid growth through the mid nineteenth century and at one-point surpassed Chicago in size. During the Civil War, several Union Generals including future President Ulysses S. Grant answered the call of service and left from the Galena train station. Abraham Lincoln also made a few visits to town, most famously to make a speech from the Desoto House on Main Street. Due to a decline in lead mining and the receding Galena River, Galena's population and prominence declined during the late nineteenth century. Fortunately, it's stunning architecture and natural beauty remain and have transformed it into the tourist destination it is today!
